Voters Not Politicians to engage attendees at all three political party conventions this weekend

Voters Not Politicians volunteers will be at all three political party conventions being held this weekend, promoting Proposal 2 as a nonpartisan way to restore democracy in Michigan by ending partisan redistricting.

Volunteers will speak with attendees of the Republican, Democratic, and Libertarian party conventions. They will answer questions about the Voters Not Politicians proposal and seek commitments to vote Yes on Proposal 2 as part of the major canvass of the state now under way.

“Republicans, Democrats, and Libertarians are among the 425,000 people who signed our petitions, and we are continuing to build support across the political spectrum,” said Katie Fahey, founder and executive director of Voters Not Politicians. “We know that some of the most politically engaged voters volunteer with state parties, and we want to reach out to as many of them as possible to seek their support and their vote on November 6.”

Proposal 2 seeks to end the state’s current practice that allows politicians operating in secret to draw voting districts for the state Legislature and Congress that benefit specific politicians or parties. The proposal would establish an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission that would be required to operate totally in public, with hearings before and after maps are drawn. Those maps could not be drawn to benefit any politician or party. The commission will require compromises between its four Republicans, four Democrats, and five non-affiliated members by mandating at least two members of each group support any map before it can be approved.

“Voters Not Politicians is a nonpartisan campaign that welcomes support from any person or organization dedicated to passing Proposal 2 on November 6,” said Fahey. “We have earned the endorsements of a number of former Republican state lawmakers including former Michigan House Speaker Rick Johnson, as well as groups that traditionally support Democratic, third party, and Independent candidates. We are continuing to grow our coalition of individuals and groups that support an end to our rigged redistricting system that lets politicians choose their voters. It’s time to take back our government so voters choose their politicians.”
