State Board to Meet About Redistricting Reform Proposal

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — The Michigan Board of State Canvassers has announced its meeting to review Voters Not Politicians’ ballot proposal for nonpartisan redistricting reform.

The meeting regarding this petition will take place Thursday, August 17 at 10 am in Lansing. The meeting is open to the public.

"This policy is the culmination of months of collaboration between VNP volunteers and interested members of the public, community groups, and national policy experts,” said Nancy Wang, chair of the Voters Not Politicians policy team. “We are thrilled to be taking the next step toward getting it on the ballot and before the voters in 2018."

The process to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot begins with submitting petition language to the Secretary of State. Voters Not Politicians submitted the first draft of the language on June 28, 2017 and has since consulted with staff members at the Bureau of Elections to assure compliance with technical formatting requirements. The meeting with the Board of State Canvassers is expected to lead to an “as to form” approval of the petition. This optional process ensures the petition meets all technical formatting requirements. This is not required by Michigan election law, but, according to the Michigan Department of State, such approval “...greatly reduces the risk that signatures collected on the form will be ruled invalid due to formatting defects.”

Staff is currently waiting for a final number of Voters Not Politicians supporters who plan to attend the event before scheduling the room. Please check the Board of State Canvassers scheduled meetings page here for more details as they are available:

Voters Not Politicians needs to collect 315,654 valid signatures in a 180 consecutive day window in order to secure a spot on the November 6 2018 election as a ballot measure.
