Voters Not Politicians to Begin Circulating Petition Following Unanimous Vote by State Board

LANSING, Michigan — The Michigan Board of State Canvassers voted unanimously on Thursday to approve “as to form” the petition language submitted by Voters Not Politicians.

”We want to thank the Bureau of Elections and Board of State Canvassers for its invaluable input during this process,” said Voters Not Politicians President Katie Fahey. “It is an honor for us to participate in this form of direct democracy, this has always been about the voters of Michigan. Our campaign is so excited to now give the people of our state a chance to show their support for redistricting reform by signing our petition, and then ultimately voting for it to pass in November 2018.”

According to the Michigan Department of State, the Board of State Canvassers’ approval “...greatly reduces the risk that signatures collected on the form will be ruled invalid due to formatting defects.” The next stage is for Voters Not Politicians to circulate the petition and collect 315,654 valid signatures within 180 consecutive days from registered Michigan voters.

”This approval allows us to move to the next phase,” said Field Director, Jamie Lyons-Eddy. “We have thousands of volunteers ready to begin circulating the petition to gather signatures.”

Voters Not Politicians will begin to circulate the petition immediately. Signature collection will begin at the Soup Spoon Cafe in Lansing from 2pm - 4pm and at Motor City Brewing Works in Detroit from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The first signature will be that of former Lansing Mayor David Hollister. The field team will also be collecting signatures throughout the state this weekend at events including the Woodward Dream Cruise, Back to the Bricks in Flint, Traverse City Art Fair, and many other local events.

Unlike most other petition drives, Voters Not Politicians is a volunteer-driven organization with no paid staff. All of the organization’s leadership and petition circulators are unpaid volunteers.
