I deeply value the mission and objectives of Voters Not Politicians, and for me there is absolutely no limit on the value of a government which is reasonable, responsive, and representative. Right now we have one which is none of these. It should always take more than a party affiliation to win an election; this is true in Farmington, Kentwood, Paw Paw, Marquette, and Ann Arbor. It should take more than a few big donors to win a primary. If you have ever wished your party would nominate someone better so you could back them with real pride, now is your chance to make that impact.
Finally, for me, Michigan is the bridge to the future of a nation-wide movement of citizens taking back their government, and making sure it is structured in a way which promotes both efficiency and fairness. The way our voter-led and volunteer-supported organization is proposing to address the problems of gerrymandering shines a giant spotlight on the redistricting process when it happens every ten years; bringing the way our votes are counted from behind closed doors and out into the open, and inviting public comments before being enacted. This means effects of the proposal such as increased responsiveness from candidates and officeholders will be on display for our neighboring states to see.
Please, contribute what you can, and if you are in Michigan between July and December, sign up to volunteer to circulate the petition. The reality is we need a massive running start in order to make sure we can be wildly successful when we are on the ballot in November 2018. The only way to make sure we have the resources we need to win that fight is for us to exceed our fundraising and signature gathering goals as by much as possible. The faster we can get to 500,000 signatures, the faster we can turn to spreading the good news of redistricting reform, and the faster we can gather the resources needed to support our thousands of volunteers, the faster we can get that ink on paper!
