Presidents agree: Gerrymandering is no good for democracy

In President George Washington’s farewell address, he said, “The basis of our political system is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of government.”

On President’s Day, those words ring more true than ever — and with your support, we will fix Michigan’s broken redistricting process through a state constitutional amendment.

Help us spread our message by sharing the words from President Reagan and President Obama, two U.S. Presidents who have directly spoken out against gerrymandering.

On March 22, 1988, President Ronald Reagan said the following during his Remarks to State and Local Republican Officials on Federalism and Aid to the Nicaraguan Democratic Resistance:

"...and that's all we're asking for: an end to the anti-democratic and un-American practice of gerrymandering congressional districts."

In his January 2016 State of the Union Address, President Barack Obama called for an end to partisan redistricting:

"We have to end the practice of drawing our congressional districts so that politicians can pick their voters, and not the other way around."

This President's Day, lets not only remember President Washington's words that we - the people - have the right to alter government systems, but also President Reagan and Obama's words that gerrymandering is "anti-democratic," "un-American," and that voters should choose their politicians, "not the other way around."

As a Voters Not Politicians supporter, you know the importance of ending the partisan manipulation of voting maps in Michigan where our voices as voters are silenced by politicians trying to keep themselves in power. Here's how you can help end gerrymandering in Michigan:

Save the Date // save the date and vote YES for an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission in the November 6 2018 election!

Donate // the politicians and special interests who benefit from the current system will spend millions defending and protecting their unfair advantage. We have to fight back, and that will include advertising and putting together hundreds of local events across Michigan to educate voters on their rights. Donate to Voters Not Politicians here.

Volunteer // we are recruiting volunteers to spread the word in 2018 to help us end gerrymandering in Michigan! If you are interested in being a part of this vital part of the process, please click here.
